Date of Passing: May 14, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN WALTER CAMPBELL Peacefully on Saturday, May 14, 2011 Walt passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 93 years. Left to cherish Walt's memory is his sister Gail; children Lorna, Barbara, and Don (Rita) as well as by granddaughter Sarah. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Dean; brother Gordon and his parents Mary and Tom Campbell. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba Walt had many fond memories of his childhood days in St. James. He cared about people and could count amongst his good friends many from his childhood days on Amherst Street. If you became a friend of Walt's you were a friend for life. Stories of his youth included swimming in the Assiniboine River dodging logs and walking from Portage Avenue to the St. Charles Golf Course to caddy; hence his lifelong love of golf. When Walt hit a golf ball, it was sweet watching it launch into the air and then swoop upwards for a great long drive. He was also an ardent curler and a Past President and Life Member of the Deer Lodge Curling Club. Walt served in the Second World War in the RCAF where he was stationed in Britain from 1939 to 1945. He earned the nickname Mother due to his caring and flair for helping others. He served in the Reserves following the war. After the war Walt worked for T. Eaton's company as a catalogue model. He joined R.L. Crain Ltd. for 30 years where he was a top salesman and a Life Member of the R.L. Crain President's Achievement Club enjoying many reward trips and cruises. Dad loved taking vacations with his family and friends and many a story was relived at the dining room table about trailering adventures across North America. He took pride in building the cottage at Whytewold Beach where family and friends were always welcome. Dad's love and skill at baking tea biscuits was an excuse for many years to invite us over in the middle of the week. Dad, those biscuits were so tender and delicious! In recent years he took pride in hearing about his granddaughter's many accomplishments. At Walt's request, no funeral service will be held. To Celebrate Walt's life a gathering of family and friends will be held at his family home on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. For further information call 204-299-2266. Our family would like to thank the Home Care workers who supported Dad over the past years, and extend very special thanks for the compassionate care given by the nursing staff of Tower 7 at Deer Lodge Centre. Thanks to Dr. Schroeder for his care and for listening to Dad's needs. In lieu of flowers, donations in Walt's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
